Getting “friend zoned” is a trendy way to talk about a painful experience called unrequited love. Falling in love, especially with a friend, who does not reciprocate our feelings can hurt ourselves, our loved one, the friendship, and any (but not usually) potential romantic relationship. This week, Alysa dives into the implications of calling rejection the “friend zone” and someone “just” friends as well as outlines the frequent problematic gendered stereotypes associated with these ideas. Putting the mirror up to our faces may be like opening up a wound, but it can also be an agonizing discussion ripe for growth and acceptance.
